Golden Blood - 1

  1. GOLDEN BLOOD 1 - A black ink and gray pencil drawing on an 11 x 14 size vellum paper. It appears in "GOLDEN BLOOD," a novel by Jack Williamson, published by Tamerlane Press (Tim Underwood) in 1978.

In May of 1978, I received a letter from the author, Jack Williamson in which he wrote, "I just want to take this opportunity to say that I'm entirely delighted with the work you have done for the book. The book-plate is beautiful, and Tim has sent me copies of the other art. I think you have caught the spirit of the book exactly, and I'm looking forward to seeing the finished volume. Best, Jack Williamson".

That letter made my day. I sat back in my chair and thought about another day, back in 1952 when I was a 22 year old sergeant in the Air Force, teaching a FAX course at Scott Air Force base in Belleville, Illinois. It was evening, I was propped up in my bunk eagerly reading a new science fiction book that I had just purchased, "SEETEE SHIP," by Jack Williamson. It had a dust jacket illustrated by Edd Cartier. How incredible, that 26 years later, here I was reading a letter from Jack Williamson, telling me that he likes the artwork I did for his new book! Amazing!

And then, an even more amazing thing happened a few years later; On a Sunday afternoon I was waiting for Helen de la Ree and Joe Wrzos to come over for our monthly social, and when the doorbell rang I opened the door and there they were with someone beside them, and Helen smiled and said, "Hi Steve, I hope you don't mind, we brought Edd Cartier with us". EDD CARTIER ? I could not believe it, this truly great Golden Age artist was about to enter my home! That was a very special day for me, he became a very special friend.

That book I was reading in my bunk back in 1952, "SEETEE SHIP," now rests on a shelf in my library, it is signed by both Jack Williamson and Edd Cartier. Isn't that amazing?
